Restoration candidate

Terry Kalp, this Greenbrier's current owner, describes it below:

"My Greenbrier is white with a red stripe and it has a red/orange and white interior. It has the third seat, seatbelts, and a pushbutton radio. The bumpers are chrome. The odometer shows 34348 miles. The front seat has split and the rest of the interior is mildewed.

Right now there is no engine or transmission (was 4 speed) in the rig and it was stored outside several years before I purchased it (part of a seven Corvair deal). It is now stored inside.

I will see if I can find some photos. I would be interested in the proper engine and transmission to get the 'brier back on the road. It is located near Wichita, Kansas."

Terry also mentioned that his Greenbrier is a 6-door model.

In March 2000, Terry wrote again and said that he found the original Chevrolet Owner Protection Plan booklet and Protect-O-Plate. He found that although the van was built in December, 1964 it was not sold until June 24, 1965 from a small Chevrolet / Olds dealer in St. John, Kansas.

The engine and differential codes from the Protect-o-plate are decoded below.

In November 2002, Shaun McGarvey told me that he sold Terry the engine from #1206, which he parted out then scrapped. Amazingly, 1206 had the exact same engine date code as the engine Terry's van originally had!

In November 2004, Terry had the following info to share:

"About six months ago a long-time member of the local Corvair Club (MCCA) came by for a tour of my shop and Corvair project storage area. When I showed him the '65 Greenbrier, there was a surprised look on his face... He had owned the van at one time and he was the one who had pulled the drivetrain out 10 or 15 years ago. He said he thought he still had the transaxle somewhere, but he thought it had gone through a flood.

A couple of months later he called to say that he had located the transaxle. It missed the flood because it had been in his dune buggy. About a month ago he showed up at the shop with the transaxle in the trunk of his '64 Monza sedan. This is the last-half-of-production transaxle with the '65 passenger car differential case with the suspension mounting bosses, but the early-model style speedometer drive.

He also has the original bare engine block (T1119RU) and alternator adapter, if anyone needs them."

Great story, Terry! Sure would love some pictures...
