"I was given some old registration papers when I bought the Rampside,
dating back to the early '70s. At that time, it was owned by an auto agency in
Portland, OR called Lyman Slack Motors. On the registration cards it has the
word "parts" penciled in: Was this a parts runner for them? I'll
have to take a look at a PDX phone book and see if Lyman Slack Motors is still
in business.
Lyman Slack Motors apparently sold it to a Paul Zehner, also of Portland,
in late '76. He sold it to a Jonathan Hoeye, of Corvallis, OR in early '79. It
was then sold to Bill Guthrie, who lived in Albany, OR in early '83.
Bill Guthrie and Herb Martin are good friends, and have been for a long
time. Bill eventually moved to Redding, CA, where he was very active in Shasta
Corvairs (now defunct according to Bill?). Bill took the Rampside to Redding
along with him; I don't know when. Bill is 60 years old, and a few years ago
decided to reduce his fleet of Corvairs down to 3 (so far he's down to 5). The
Rampside was offered to Herb, and he accepted. I went with Herb to pick it up
in August of 1999, since I have a car trailer. On the drive home, a deal was
made and the Rampside became mine (Herb has 6 Rampsides currently).
I am building an engine for it, using a long-stroke truck block. I hope to
get it running and drivable this year (2001)."
